Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls

“Fair, inclusive and accessible justice is important to me because I have seen what life looks like when women do not have real choices.”

Growing up in Lape, a small village in Sumbawa, Indonesia, Mastawan saw firsthand how limited opportunities can shape the futures of women and girls. She was determined to pursue higher education for a better life.

“Justice is not only about laws, but also about access to education, opportunities and the freedom to decide our own future.”

“I believe many girls and women in rural areas are intelligent and hardworking, but their opportunities are limited by economic pressure, social expectations, and a lack of access to higher education. When society accepts this situation as normal, inequality continues quietly from one generation to the next.”

“Receiving the Australia Awards Scholarship changed the direction of my life and today I am proud to be studying at Flinders University. It was not easy, but the support and inclusive environment I found there really helped me grow in confidence and see new possibilities for my future. My story is only one example, but it shows why fair and inclusive justice matters. Every woman and girl should have chance to study, to dream, and to decide her own path.”

Through her work in Indonesia, Mastawan experienced the complexity of most community problems. While she had technical skills that could support women in her community to generate incomes, this was not enough to create long-term, meaningful solutions.

“I chose to study a Master of Sustainable Development because I want to deepen my understanding of how social, economic and environmental issues are connected, and how practical solutions can be designed to support communities in a sustainable way.”

Mastawan believes her scholarship will open many doors to a brighter future as a practitioner and researcher through an advanced knowledge and understanding of development issues that can inform both policy and practice.

“My scholarship will have a profound impact on my career. I will develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills, which are essential in addressing complex development challenges.”

She also believes her new skills will enable her to create a positive impact on the lives of vulnerable communities and contribute to the broader development goals of her country.

“Studying in Australia will also enrich my life by providing me with an opportunity to expand my worldview and develop a deeper understanding of the social, economic, and environment issues that impact the developing world. I will engage with diverse cultures, perspectives, and experiences, which will broaden my horizons and enhance my personal growth. Furthermore, I will develop leadership skills, build networks, and establish lifelong relationships with fellow students and professionals, which will enrich my life.”

Before commencing her studies, Mastawan used her expertise in textile engineering to support women’s empowerment projects and forest conservation in rural areas. The projects included production and marketing of ecoprint textiles, instruction in traditional weaving techniques, creating natural dyes from leaves and other saleable products like jam. She also supported orphans with sewing training.

“Upon my return to Indonesia, I will apply the knowledge and skills gained from my master’s program in Sustainable Development to develop and implement community-based projects and programs that address various social, economic, and environmental challenges.”

Already making valuable contacts through her study and life in Adelaide, Mastawan sees the bigger picture full of possibility.

“Using the knowledge and connections I gain from my scholarship; I will work to enhance the capacity of my non-profit organisation. I will develop new programs and initiatives, build partnerships with other organisations, and strengthen the organisation’s governance and management structures.”

“Additionally, I will use the connections I gain from the scholarship to collaborate with other organisations to increase the reach and impact of the programs.”
